How to Use a Yoni Egg
So you've received your yoni egg — now what? Below you'll find a gentle, step-by-step guide to choosing your size, choosing your crystal, preparing your egg, and moving through a safe practice that honours your body.
There's no rush here. This is a practice of presence, not performance.
🥚 What size should I start with?
It's generally recommended to start with a larger egg and work your way down over time. The larger the egg, the easier it is to feel and to engage your muscles around it.
Large (4.5cm × 3cm) — Beginner
Ideal for beginners who have given birth and/or experience weak pelvic floor conditions. The largest egg is the most forgiving starting point — easier to feel, easier to engage around.
Medium (4cm × 2.5cm) — Intermediate
For beginner-to-intermediate users looking to maintain strength, tone vaginal muscles, and who may have experienced weak pelvic floor conditions.
Small (3cm × 2cm) — Advanced
For advanced practitioners who can consciously control the egg using pelvic floor muscles alone. This is something you work towards — not where you start.
There's no "one size fits all." Bodies and rituals differ. Choose what feels best today, and swap as your practice evolves.
💎 Choosing your crystal
Each crystal carries a different energy and intention. Choose what resonates with where you are right now.
🌸 Rose Quartz
Heart-softening, calm, and tender. Ideal for self-love, building confident intimacy, and compassion rituals.
🌿 Jade Nephrite
Grounded and beginner-friendly. Builds body awareness, calm confidence, and a steady ritual you'll actually keep.
🖤 Black Obsidian
For clearing heaviness, setting fierce boundaries, and dropping into laser-clear, grounded presence.
💜 Amethyst
Quiet magic and clarity. An evening-friendly egg that melts noise and brings calm, clear presence with gentle introspection.
🌿 Step-by-step instructions
1 Sterilise before first use
Boil your yoni egg for 1–2 minutes to sterilise it. Keep the water at a low boil around 100°C — do not over-boil, as excessive heat can damage the stone. Allow the egg to cool completely before touching or using it.
2 Before & after every use
Avoid harsh cleansers or soaps with fragrances. Wash your egg with mild soap and warm water, or soak it in a few drops of pharmaceutical grade Betadine or Iodine in water. Rinse fully — run water through the string hole to cleanse thoroughly. Store in the bag provided.
3 Set an intention
Identifying your desire is the first step in any ritual. Hold the crystal close to your heart or womb space, take a few deep breaths, and focus on what you're calling in — strength, softness, connection, healing. This brings your mind, body, and energy into the same ritual space.
4 String your yoni egg (optional but recommended for beginners)
Stringing your egg makes removal easy and stress-free when you're starting out. Use the unwaxed cotton string provided — thread it through the holes in your yoni egg and tie a secure knot. Use a fresh string each time you practice. The Gaiaè string is biodegradable.
5 Insert your yoni egg
Find a comfortable position — lying down, squatting, or sitting all work well. Relax your pelvic floor muscles and take a few deep breaths to soften into your body.
Gently guide the egg into your vagina with the larger, rounded end first (just as you would a tampon). You can use a small amount of Yoni Oil or water-based lubricant around the vaginal opening or on the egg to support smooth, comfortable insertion.
Once inside, you can walk around, meditate, do Pilates, yoga, or Kegel exercises.
- Beginners: Start with 15–20 minutes a day.
- Experienced users: Gradually build up to a few hours.
6 Removal
When you're ready to remove your egg: relax, breathe slowly, and find a comfortable position — standing, kneeling, squatting, or sitting over the toilet. Squatting shortens the vaginal canal and makes removal easier.
Pull the string gently as you would when removing a tampon, and allow the egg to slide out at its own pace. Remove the string and discard. Clean as per Step 2.
The egg cannot get "lost" — the vaginal canal is not an open tunnel. If you're struggling, relax fully, try squatting and bearing down gently, or use clean fingers to scoop it out. If you feel distressed, reach out to a pelvic health or medical professional.
💬 From Jules, Gaiaè Founder
"I have used yoni eggs for years now and have had a huge contrast in my sexual pleasure. Before, I suffered from chronic vaginismus — vaginal tightness making it unbearable to have any sexual penetration — which led me to focus on clitoral orgasms as my only source of pleasure.
I began exploring yoni egg practices as a way to rebuild trust, presence, and intimacy with myself. Through this journey, I've built a deep sense of trust within myself. I've learned how to listen to my body, honour my intuition, and move through life with a quieter, steadier confidence rooted in connection rather than control.
Yoni egg practices changed my life and inspired me to start Gaiaè — to help other women change their sexual experiences, just as it changed mine."

❓ Frequently asked questions
How long should I wear my yoni egg?
For beginners, start with 15–20 minutes a day and build gradually. Many practitioners suggest not exceeding a few hours at a time — always listen to your body first.
Can I sleep with the egg inside?
Some women choose to, but many teachers recommend intentional practice time and removing the egg before sleep, as your muscles aren't actively engaging during rest. If you're unsure, check with a pelvic health professional.
What lubricant do you recommend?
You can use a small amount of Yoni Oil directly on the egg and around your vaginal opening, or a body-safe water-based lubricant. Natural oils like coconut, almond, or sesame also work well if your body tolerates them.
Can I use a yoni egg with an IUD?
Because an IUD is a medical device placed by your doctor, the safest option is to check directly with your healthcare provider before using a yoni egg if you have an IUD or other internal contraceptive.
Can I use a yoni egg during my period?
Many women prefer to avoid internal egg practices during heavy flow days and instead focus on outward, nourishing practices — rest, warmth, gentle massage, and emotional release. On lighter days, it's a personal choice. If you experience cramping or discomfort, that's your body asking for a break.
What about pregnancy or postpartum?
If you're pregnant, stop using the egg internally and focus on nourishing practices. Postpartum, always wait until your doctor has cleared you for intercourse before returning to internal egg practice. Check with your midwife or pelvic health physiotherapist first.
The string broke — what do I do?
Take a breath. The egg cannot travel further into your body. Relax fully — tension makes muscles tighten. Try squatting low, bearing down gently, and reaching with clean fingers to locate and scoop the egg out. If you feel distressed, contact a pelvic health or medical professional for support.
I had a hysterectomy — can I still use a yoni egg?
After a hysterectomy, the top of the vaginal canal is surgically closed, so the egg cannot get lost. Some women explore gentle practices after fully healing. Because every surgery and recovery is different, check with your doctor or pelvic health specialist first.
